Schlage Keypad Guide

Schlage Keypad Reset: How to Program a Code on a Schlage Keypad Lock

A Schlage keypad reset is different from adding a user code: on common standalone models, you can add a code with the lock’s six-digit programming code. Keep the door open while you work so you can check the new code before closing it.

Before You Start a Schlage Keypad Reset or Code Change

The steps below cover the code-entry process used on common standalone Schlage keypad locks, including models such as the BE365 and FE595. A factory reset is a different procedure and can erase codes; don’t reset the lock just to add a user code.

  • The programming code — Find the lock’s six-digit programming code. It is commonly printed on the label supplied with the lock or on the keypad assembly. This is different from the four-digit code you use to unlock the door.
  • A new four-digit code — Choose a code you can enter comfortably on the keypad. Avoid sharing it with people who should not have access.
  • The door open and the key nearby — Keep the door open during programming and have the working key with you. That way, you can test the code without risking a lockout.
  • The exact lock model — Check the lock’s model information before entering the sequence. Schlage models differ, so use the model-specific instructions at the Schlage support page if your keypad does not match the steps below.

The Schlage Keypad Code-Programming Sequence

For a compatible standalone keypad lock, use this sequence to add a user code. Press each button deliberately and wait for the keypad’s response before continuing.

  1. Leave the door open — Open the door and keep it open throughout setup and testing. Make sure the bolt can move freely.
  2. Press the Schlage button — Press the button marked Schlage on the keypad. On models with a lit button, it should illuminate.
  3. Enter the programming code — Key in the lock’s six-digit programming code. The keypad may flash or beep as it accepts the entry; the sound depends on the model and its settings.
  4. Press 1 — Press the number 1 to start adding a user code. Watch or listen for the lock’s prompt before entering the new code.
  5. Enter the new four-digit code — Key in the code you chose. Use the same code length required by your specific model.
  6. Enter the new code again — Key in the same four digits a second time to confirm. A successful entry is usually indicated by a green light or check and a beep, though the signal can vary by model and sound setting.
  7. Test the code with the door open — Wait for the keypad to return to its normal state, then lock and unlock the open door using the new code. Confirm that the bolt moves as expected before closing the door.

If Your Schlage Keypad Does Not Accept the New Code

A missed button press or a model-specific sequence can interrupt setup. Check the lock’s response and correct the issue before trying the sequence again.

The programming code was entered incorrectly

Check the six-digit code on the lock’s label or supplied materials. A regular user code will not replace the programming code in this sequence.

The lock uses a different procedure

Connected Schlage models and other keypad versions may use different programming steps. Check the exact model instructions rather than repeating a sequence that does not match your lock.

The keypad did not register a press

Enter the sequence slowly and watch for the light or sound prompt between actions. If a button is unresponsive, stop and check the keypad and lock instructions.

You are trying to factory-reset the lock

Adding a code does not require a factory reset. Reset steps vary by model and may erase existing user codes, so check the model-specific instructions before resetting.

When to Call a Locksmith for a Schlage Keypad Lock

Call a locksmith if you cannot find the programming code, the keypad will not respond, or the lock still rejects the code after you confirm the correct model-specific sequence. We provide mobile locksmith service and are open 24/7. For help with Schlage keypad lock repair and codes, call (385) 853-5247 or contact us.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add a Schlage keypad code without the programming code?

The usual add-code sequence requires the lock’s programming code, which is not the same as your everyday user code. If you cannot locate it, check the lock’s supplied materials or contact a locksmith for help with the lock.

Does this code sequence work on Schlage Encode locks?

Not necessarily. Schlage Encode and other connected models may use different setup steps, so identify the model and use its instructions at Schlage support before changing codes.

How can I tell whether the new code was added?

The lock commonly signals a successful entry with a green light or check and a beep, though indicators vary by model and sound setting. Test the code with the door open and confirm that the bolt locks and unlocks.

Should I factory-reset the lock before adding a code?

No, adding a user code normally does not require a factory reset. A reset may erase existing user codes, and its steps depend on the model.
