SmartKey Rekey Guide

How to Reset a Kwikset SmartKey Lock

A Kwikset SmartKey reset changes which key operates a compatible lock cylinder. With the working key, a new compatible key, and the SmartKey tool, you can rekey it yourself and test the result while the door is open.

  • Use the working key and SmartKey tool
  • Follow clear, physical rekeying steps
  • Test the lock before closing the door
  • Call our mobile locksmith for help

What You Need to Reset a Kwikset SmartKey Lock

Kwikset calls this process rekeying: you change the key that operates the cylinder rather than resetting a keypad code. Start with the door open so you can test the lock without risking a lockout. This procedure is for a compatible SmartKey cylinder and assumes you have its current working key.

  • The working key — Use the key that currently operates the lock. It must turn the cylinder smoothly.
  • A compatible new key — Have a correctly cut key that fits the SmartKey cylinder. A key that does not insert fully or turn smoothly is not suitable for this process.
  • The SmartKey tool — Use the small SmartKey learn tool supplied with the lock or a compatible rekeying kit. It goes into the small opening beside the keyway.
  • An open door — Keep the door open throughout rekeying and testing. Make sure the lock can move freely before you begin.

How to Reset a Kwikset SmartKey Lock With a New Key

Work in order and avoid forcing the key or tool. SmartKey models can differ, so check the Kwikset support page for the instructions that match your lock if its parts or steps do not match these.

  1. Unlock the door and leave it open — Keep the door open so the latch or bolt cannot trap you outside if the rekey does not take.
  2. Insert the current working key — Put the key that operates the lock fully into the cylinder. Turn it a quarter turn clockwise, or 90 degrees, from its normal upright position.
  3. Press in the SmartKey tool — With the current key turned, push the SmartKey tool straight into the small SmartKey opening until you feel it click. Then remove the tool.
  4. Remove the current key — Pull the working key out while the cylinder remains in the rekeying position. Do not turn the cylinder back yet.
  5. Insert the new key — Put the new, compatible key fully into the keyway. It should seat all the way without force.
  6. Turn the new key back — Rotate the new key a quarter turn counterclockwise, back to its starting position. The key should turn smoothly; do not force it if it binds.
  7. Remove and test the new key — Return the key to its normal removal position and take it out. Reinsert it and turn it to operate the lock while the door is still open. Confirm that the latch or bolt moves freely before closing the door.

Why a Kwikset SmartKey Rekey May Not Work

If the new key does not operate the lock, keep the door open and stop rather than forcing the cylinder. Check these common issues before trying again.

The current key is not the working key

SmartKey rekeying requires the key that currently operates the cylinder. A key that inserts but does not turn smoothly cannot complete the process.

The new key is incompatible or poorly cut

The replacement key must fit the lock and be cut correctly. If it does not insert fully or turns roughly, use a suitable, correctly cut key instead.

The tool did not engage

The SmartKey tool must be seated in the small opening while the current key is turned. If you did not feel it click, the cylinder may not have entered rekeying mode.

The cylinder or lock is binding

A stiff or damaged cylinder can keep the key from turning through the sequence. Stop if the key or tool resists; forcing either can cause further damage.

When to Call a Locksmith for a Kwikset SmartKey Lock

Call a locksmith if you do not have the working key, the key or tool will not move as described, or the lock still will not operate after a careful attempt. Do not try to bypass the lock or force a jammed key. We provide mobile locksmith service and are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Frequently asked questions

Does a Kwikset SmartKey reset change a keypad code?

No. Rekeying changes which key operates the SmartKey cylinder; it does not reset an electronic keypad code. Keypad code setup depends on the lock’s specific model.

Can I rekey a Kwikset SmartKey lock without its current key?

The owner rekeying process requires the working key to put the cylinder into rekeying mode. If you do not have that key, contact a locksmith rather than trying to force or bypass the lock.

How can I check that my new key works?

Leave the door open, then insert the new key and turn it to check that the latch or bolt moves freely. You can also check that the old key no longer operates the cylinder while the door remains open.

Does the same SmartKey reset procedure work on every Kwikset lock?

No. This procedure is for compatible SmartKey cylinders, not every Kwikset lock or keypad. Compare your lock with the model instructions on Kwikset’s support site if the parts or sequence differ.
