Lock Reset Guide

How to Reset a Master Lock Combination Lock

This guide walks you through a Master Lock combination lock reset on compatible resettable padlocks. Start with the lock open and its current combination, then test your new code before you secure anything.

  • Owner steps for compatible resettable padlocks
  • Start with the current combination
  • Test the new code before locking up

What to Check Before a Master Lock Combination Lock Reset

These steps apply to a resettable padlock with a reset-tool port and its matching reset tool. A Master Lock dial combination lock or another model may use a different setup—or may not allow the owner to change its combination. Identify the model before you begin.

  • The current combination — You need to open the lock with its existing combination before resetting it. If you do not know the combination or cannot open the lock, do not try to force or bypass it.
  • The matching reset tool — Check the lock for a reset-tool port and make sure you have the tool made for that lock. Do not push a random key or object into the port.
  • A new combination you can remember — Choose the code before you start and keep it private. Make sure you can enter it accurately while the shackle is open.
  • The model-specific instructions — Reset methods vary between Master Lock models. For a model with different controls or a different reset tool, check the instructions through Master Lock support before turning or pressing anything.

Steps for a Master Lock Combination Lock Reset

Use these steps only for a resettable model that has a reset-tool port. Keep the lock open throughout the reset and test the new code before closing it.

  1. Set the current combination — Turn the combination wheels to the code that currently opens your lock. Align each number with the model’s indicator mark.
  2. Open the padlock — Pull the shackle up to open the lock. If it does not open with the current combination, stop here rather than trying to reset a locked padlock.
  3. Insert the reset tool — Find the reset-tool port on the lock body and insert the matching tool fully. Do not force it if it does not fit.
  4. Turn the tool to reset position — Turn the reset tool about 90 degrees in either direction, as specified for this style of lock. It should stay in the reset position while you set the wheels.
  5. Set the new combination — Turn each wheel to one number in your chosen code. Check the indicator marks so every number lines up clearly.
  6. Return and remove the tool — Turn the reset tool back to its starting position, then pull it out. The wheels should stay set to the new combination.
  7. Test before closing — With the shackle still open, scramble the wheels, then enter the new combination and pull the shackle to confirm it opens. Repeat the test once more before you close the padlock.
  8. Secure the lock — When the test works, close the shackle and scramble the wheels. Store the new combination somewhere you can access without leaving it beside the lock.

Why a Master Lock Combination Reset May Not Work

If the lock does not respond as expected, pause before repeating the reset. Forcing the tool or guessing at a different mechanism can damage the lock.

The lock is not open

The owner reset procedure starts with the padlock open using its current combination. If you cannot open it, these steps will not reset it.

The model uses another reset method

Not every Master Lock combination lock uses a reset-tool port. Check the model number and instructions; some models have different controls or do not offer an owner-set combination.

The tool is not seated or turned correctly

A tool that does not fit the port may be the wrong tool, and a tool that will not turn should not be forced. Remove it and check the model-specific directions.

A wheel is between numbers

If one or more wheels are not aligned with the indicator marks, the code may not register as intended. Set each wheel carefully and test the code while the shackle remains open.

When to Call a Locksmith for a Master Lock Combination Lock

Call a locksmith if you cannot open the padlock with the current combination, the reset tool is missing or will not turn, or the lock still will not accept its code after you follow the correct model-specific procedure. Do not force the shackle or try to bypass the lock. We are open 24/7 and come to you as a mobile locksmith; learn more about our Master Lock locksmith service or contact us.

Frequently asked questions

Can I reset a Master Lock combination padlock without knowing its current combination?

The owner reset steps start with the padlock open, using its current combination. If you cannot open it, do not try to force or bypass the lock; contact Master Lock support or a locksmith for help with your model.

Can I change the combination on any Master Lock dial lock?

No. Master Lock models do not all use the same reset method, and some dial combination locks are not owner-resettable. Check the model number and its instructions before attempting to change the code.

Should I close the lock before testing my new combination?

No. Keep the shackle open, scramble the wheels, and enter the new code to verify that it opens. Close the lock only after the new combination works.

What should I do if the reset tool will not turn?

Stop rather than forcing it, since the tool may be incorrect or the lock may use a different reset procedure. Check the model-specific instructions, and contact a locksmith if the lock remains open but will not reset.
