Before You Start a Schlage Encode Reset
- Confirm you have a Schlage Encode — Check the lock’s name or model information before beginning. Other Schlage electronic locks may use a different reset sequence.
- Keep the door open — Leave the door open while resetting and testing the lock. This lets you check its operation without risking the door closing while the lock is not set up.
- Have the default programming code ready — A factory reset clears stored user codes and settings. Locate the default programming code supplied with the lock so you can set it up again afterward.
- Check the batteries and your access — You need access to the inside battery compartment and working batteries for the reset sequence. Keep your key available as a backup while you test the lock.
Steps for a Schlage Encode Factory Reset
- Open the door and remove the battery cover — Work from the inside of the door. Set the cover aside where it will not be lost, and make sure you can reach the battery pack.
- Disconnect the battery pack — Remove the batteries or disconnect the battery pack from the lock, depending on your Encode model. Wait until the lock has no power before continuing.
- Press and hold the Schlage button — Find the Schlage button on the lock’s keypad and keep it pressed. Do not release it before reconnecting the batteries.
- Reconnect the batteries while holding the button — Keep holding the Schlage button as you reconnect the battery pack or reinstall the batteries. Make sure the batteries are seated correctly.
- Watch and listen for the reset signal — Release the button when the lock beeps and the green check mark lights. The signal indicates that the factory reset sequence has completed.
- Press the Schlage button once — Press and release the Schlage button one time after the reset signal. The lock should return to its factory settings.
- Set up and test the lock with the door open — Use the default programming code to begin setting up the lock again, then test its keypad and bolt while the door remains open. The reset removes saved user codes and settings, so do not expect your previous codes to work.

If Your Schlage Encode Reset Does Not Finish
The lock gives no beep or light
Check that the batteries are installed correctly and have power, then try the sequence again. The lock needs power to signal that the reset has completed.
The button was released too soon
The Schlage button needs to stay pressed while you reconnect the batteries. If you released it early, disconnect the batteries and repeat the sequence from the beginning.
The lock signals an error
A red indicator or a different signal may mean the sequence did not complete as expected. Check the instructions for your exact model; Schlage’s support page provides product help and manuals.
The bolt still sticks or will not move
A factory reset clears electronic settings, but it does not correct a mechanical problem or a door and bolt that bind. Avoid forcing the bolt; check whether it moves freely with the door open.

Frequently asked questions
Will a factory reset erase my Schlage Encode user codes?
Yes. A factory reset clears the saved user codes and lock settings, so your old codes will no longer work. Have the default programming code ready before you begin setting up the lock again.
Will resetting my Schlage Encode change the physical key?
The reset changes the lock’s electronic settings, not the mechanical key. Keep your key available while you test the lock, especially with the door open.
Do I need to set up the Schlage Encode again after resetting it?
Yes. The reset clears settings, so you will need to set up the lock again and add the codes you want to use. Use the default programming code supplied with the lock.
What if my Schlage Encode keypad does not respond?
Check that the batteries are seated correctly and have power before trying the reset sequence. If the keypad still does not respond or the lock will not operate, call a locksmith rather than forcing the bolt.
