How Schlage Sense Uses Codes and Bluetooth
Schlage Sense is a Bluetooth-enabled touchscreen deadbolt. You can unlock it with a programmed access code at the keypad or use the Schlage Sense app when your phone is within Bluetooth range. It can also work with Apple HomeKit; remote access requires a compatible Schlage Sense Wi-Fi Adapter and setup.
The lock runs on batteries and operates the deadbolt when you enter a valid code or use a compatible paired device. It also has a keyed cylinder. If you’re comparing options, we can discuss the Schlage lock range and whether Sense fits your door and how you want to use it.
When Schlage Sense Fits Your Door and Routine
You want keypad entry
Sense suits people who want to unlock a deadbolt with a code rather than use a key for every entry. It can also be useful when you want to manage codes for people who need access.
You use Apple HomeKit or Bluetooth access
This lock may fit if you want to use the Schlage Sense app nearby or connect it with a compatible Apple HomeKit setup. Check your phone, smart-home setup and preferred access method before choosing.
You need a different lock style or setup
If your priority is a standard keyed deadbolt, a different Schlage option such as the Schlage B60 may be a better fit. For a restricted key system, ask us about Schlage Primus instead.

Schlage Sense Installation, Rekeying and Service
- Install the lock — We come to you to install Schlage Sense and check that the deadbolt moves smoothly in the door and frame. A lock that binds against the strike plate may need door or hardware adjustment.
- Set up codes and access — We can help with initial setup or changes to access codes and pairing. Keep the programming information and account details you need available so you can manage the lock after service.
- Rekey the keyed cylinder — If you want a different key to operate the cylinder, ask about rekeying. Rekeying changes which key works; it does not reset app settings or user codes. Lock rekeying starts at $65 per lock.
- Troubleshoot lock problems — We can inspect problems such as a bolt that sticks, a keypad that doesn’t respond as expected, or difficulty completing setup. We’ll look at the lock and door together to identify what needs attention.
- Replace or service lock hardware — If the lock or its connected hardware needs repair or replacement, we can assess the issue at your property and discuss the appropriate service.
Common Schlage Sense Problems to Check
Schlage Sense not working after a code entry
Check that you’re entering an active code and that the keypad responds. If the bolt also feels tight when you operate it, door alignment or friction may be part of the problem.
App or Bluetooth connection trouble
A phone may not connect if Bluetooth is off, the phone is out of range, or the lock and app setup are no longer paired as expected. Check the app and lock instructions before repeating setup.
Low or depleted batteries
Weak batteries can affect keypad response and lock operation. Replace the batteries with the type specified in the product instructions, and check that they are installed in the correct orientation.
A reset that removes settings
A factory reset can clear user codes and connected settings. Before resetting, make sure you have the information needed to set the lock up again and follow the instructions for your exact lock.
A deadbolt that rubs or sticks
The bolt should move freely into the door frame. If it catches, forcing it can make the problem worse; the door, strike plate or lock installation may need adjustment.

Frequently asked questions
How do I change a Schlage Sense code I already know?
Use the Schlage Sense app or the keypad process described in the lock’s instructions; keypad changes require the lock’s programming information. Keep the door open while testing a changed code so you can confirm it works before relying on it.
How long do Schlage Sense batteries last?
Battery life depends on how often the lock is used and other operating conditions, so there isn’t one duration that applies to every household. Check the battery indicator and product instructions, and replace the batteries when the lock signals that they are low.
Will Schlage Sense fit my existing door?
Fit depends on the door’s preparation, thickness, backset, bore and deadbolt alignment. We can inspect the door at your property and assess whether the existing holes and frame suit the lock before installation.
Can I add a user or guest code to Schlage Sense?
Yes, Schlage Sense supports user access codes that you can add using the app or the lock’s keypad procedure, depending on your setup. Follow the product instructions, choose a code you can manage securely, and remove it when that person no longer needs access.
What happens if power or the Schlage Sense batteries run out?
Schlage Sense uses batteries, so a household power outage alone does not power the lock down. If its batteries are depleted, the lock may stop responding electronically; use the keyed cylinder if you have the key, or follow Schlage’s instructions for emergency power and then replace the batteries.
